The Group will be showcasing its work, activities and archive at an ‘Open Day’ at the Guildhall in Thaxted on Saturday 13th August.
Over the past few years the Group has explored a diverse range of local subjects, from the history of Tilty Abbey to the impact of the Second World War on the villages of the Five Parishes. Group members have researched and reported on, for example: local writers and artists in the area, schools in the Five Parishes, Maternity and Children’s Homes in Great Easton, the Rev. Maxted (‘red vicar’ of Tilty 1908-1918), WWI memorials, WWII pillboxes, WWII plane crashes, tobacco-growing, and the life of the Rev. Cuthbertson (who featured in an item on BBC1’s ‘The One Show’ in April 2014).
The exhibition will feature material, including photographs and film clips, relating to these and other local subjects. The Group has also been involved in hands-on archaeology, and there will be the chance to take a look at finds from recent test-pit digs in two gardens at Tilty, and at some items from the 1942 excavations.
The exhibition will be open from 11:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and admission is free.
