Lance Corporal George William Perry { 898 } 1st/1st, Essex Yeomanry who died on 17 November 1916 Age 24.
Son of William and Fanny Perry, of Rose Cottage, Duton Hill, Dunmow, Essex
Remembered in Aubin-St. Vaast Churchyard.
From 1911 Census:
Aged 19 in 1911, and employed as a shepherd on a farm. Both parents living; one younger sister, and also an 11 year old ‘boarder’ (possibly from Barnado’s).

L/Cpl G Perry entered France on 30th November 1914; he was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
He died on 17 November 1916 during a period when the Essex Yeomanry were billeted in the Aubin-St-Vaast area, their HQ being at Plumoison, with a lot of time and trouble being spent in improving billets and stables in the area and turning into an imposing HQ what was once very little but a ruin.
The reference to ‘Died’, rather than ‘Died of Wounds’ on the Medal Index Card would indicate an illness, exposure or an accident causing death, rather than from wounds received in action. His burial in Aubin-St-Vaast Churchyard would support this conclusion as the Yeomanry suffered no other casualties between 9 October and 3 December 1916.
