Private Ernest George Edward Butcher { 41852 } 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment who died on 6 April 1918 Age 19.
Son of Frederic and Eliza Butcher, of “Foxholes Cottage”, Great Easton.
Remembered in St. Amand British Cemetery.
From 1911 Census:
Aged 12 in 1911, and attending school. His parents were Frederic and Eliza Butcher; Ernest was one of a family of nine children listed on the census return – though his parents had 11 children still living. An 11 year old boarder is also listed.

The family address is given as ‘Duton Hill’ on the CWG website. However, from the 1901 and 1911 census returns, confirmed by information provided on a 1919 Estate Summary, they lived at “Foxholes” Cottages, Great Easton (2 cottages, with 10 rooms); this is on Water Lane (the road from Great Easton to Broxted).
From Medal Index Card: ‘Died of Wounds’, so died later as a direct result of the battle. Pte Butcher was entitled to the British War Medal (BWM) and Victory Medal (VM).
